JulyLight Aviation Association's Southern Strut The first and Best!2nd JulyOn July 2nd between 18.00 and 20.00 this year we plan to have a 'members flying non-members event' (this will be partly sponsored by the Airport Authority when the landing fees at Shoreham will be half price). The idea is that newer members or non-flying members can have a 15 to 30 minutes flight to give them a taste of flying. If there are people out there who would like to experience a flight and are not members of our strut then come along and join on the evening! We will be organizing this from the restaurant. Ring 07790669163 for more information. One of the big pluses from being a member of the LAA is than you can own and operate aircraft which are generally more advanced (but certainly different) than the standard spam can and the cost of doing so is normally greatly reduced. The photographs below show two typical LAA type aircraft which are based at Shoreham Airport.
Some years ago a group of aviating friends met in the King and Queen pub in Brighton. They sought to form a local club of like minded associates to promote their activities in the area. Each was a member of the Popular Flying Association, now re-named the Light Aircraft Association (LAA). So the Southern Strut came into being; the word 'Strut' was chosen because it denotes 'support' (as in a strut on an aircraft). And 'support' is really what the club is all about; whether the member is a homebuilder/restorer of aeroplanes or a newly qualified PPL who wants more out of his flying. The Strut is self regulating but is an affiliate of the LAA. (There are now fifty Strut groups around the country). The social side is very important; bringing together people from all walks of life so they can make new friends and share information with each other. Building an aircraft from scratch can be a daunting task! We hold our monthly Strut meetings in the Restaurant at Shoreham Airport. These are more than just friendly get-togethers because we often have a guest speaker knowledgeable on aviation related subjects. Recently we've had talks on navigation, gliding and flying in the AN3. The idea is to have something for everyone to enjoy; friends and partners of members are always welcome to come and join in. We have our annual fly-in at Redhill with a barbeque and plan more summer fly-ins and young aviators' days. And we have our Christmas party with a buffet provided by ourselves.
With a membership of over fifty, there is a large pool of knowledge. If you want to buy/sell a plane or a share in one, or gain information on materials, this is a good place to start. There is nearly always 'someone who knows someone' who can help you get what you want. Many members are or have been commercial pilots. We produce our own monthly newsletter (running at between 4 -8 pages) which I like to think is more than just a point of contact. The Strut is a member of the LAA's National Council so this is an excellent way we can keep people informed of any developments that happen at the LAA's headquarters at Turweston Airfield. It also contains a mix of local news, member's adventure flying articles, photographs, viewpoints and what's on. As editor I am intending to start the 'Southern Strut Group of Writers' to provide help for anyone writing letters/articles for aviation magazines such as Pilot. Shoreham Airport - Car Boot Sales every Sunday - 7am to 2pm. Ronnie Smith Band2nd Tuesday in each monthRonnie Smith started his musical career on Shoreham Beach, practising the bugle and trumpet without a mouthpiece. He moved on and played bugle in the school band at Shoreham College. Ronnie was too young to serve during the second World War but was attracted to the armed services, becoming a drummer in the Welsh Guards. Eventually he played with some of the famous bands such as Harry Leader, Eric Winstone, Syd Dean and Joe Daniels and has also performed for the BBC. Ron wanted his own band, not only to concentrate on the big band music he liked, but to branch out into Jazz. He became versatile at both being 'mine host' at formal occasions where he would perform for dances or in concert situations, or indeed in support of show. Ron has been no small timer, in the past he has played at Buckingham Palace and on the lawns of The White House.
Ron could be sleazy with the best of them, turning from formal to informal and busking Jazz in any place where a crowd could get together for some fun. His musical versatility capabilities could provide a band of any make-up and size to suit the occasion. He entered the Dance Band Championships and won the South of England competition. Ron spent his years at numerous Holiday camps, Redcoats, Bluecoats, any coat as long as they were paid. Days off he would be out at Clubs, Dancehall, Theatre and not forgetting the pubs where the Jazz teams played their six pieces.
Over the years have also included varied occasions at the Scouts Worthing Gang Show or the inimitable Worthing X Factor, it's Talent Night Show at the Pier Pavilion. Thanks Ron for the pleasure and enjoyment you have given over the years. Main Terminal Building Restaurant & Bar |
