RAFA Reach the Million

AIR MARSHAL PHILIP STURLEY CB, MBE, BSc, PRESIDENT OF RAF

Association (RAFA) RECEIVES CHEQUE FOR ONE MILLION POUNDS

Shoreham Airport Terminal Building, West Sussex was the scene for a presentation in front of invited guests for a cheque of "One Million Pounds" representing the total raised from the Shoreham RAFA Airshow's.

This years two day display held over The Battle of Britain weekend raised a record sum in excess of £130,000. "To our knowledge this is an outstanding achievement and a fund raising record to be proud of, that has not been surpassed since the association was founded," said Air Marshal Philip Sturley.

Squadron Leader Al Pinner Officer Commanding "The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight" and representing the Royal Air Force added that all involved at Shoreham had made the event one of the highlights of the display calendar and the Royal Air Force was proud to be associated with such an airshow.

Vic Norman founder of the Aerosuperbatics Wing Walking display team that appeared at the first Fete (as it was then known) seventeen years ago flew into Shoreham in very inclement weather. Expressing the feeling of many of the display pilots he said "Shoreham is a unique family event and one of the most popular venues as well as a truly professionally organised airshow resulting in it being at the top of my teams display listing each year." The team will be displaying under their new sponsor "Guinot Cosmetics" in a four ship at Shoreham in 2007.

Founders Don Bean MBE and Peter Eager both thanked all involved for their support including the airport management, pilots, safety teams, branch members, RAF Association HQ staff, all three services and the many others who have made the event the success it now is.

Squadron Leader Al Pinner

In concluding John Periam Press officer thanked all the media for their continued support adding "We are already planning 2007 and are looking forward to working alongside the airports new owners and John Haffenden Airport Manager in making it an event we can all be proud of - with some exciting flying additions already being booked supported by several new sponsors to be announced in the New Year." After Don Bean confirmed the dates for 2007 as September the 15th and 16th the guests then had the opportunity to meet the media, airport management and members of the organising team.

Friday 16th & Saturday 17th November Children In Need

The Airport Manager, administration staff and the Fly-In Bar & restaurant dressed up as pirates for the day to help raise money for Children In Need. We had live coverage with BBC Southern Counties which caused a stir and some laughter.

The ´bring and buy´ was a success and people were so generous with their donations. The amount raised was £467.00. The ´face painting´ was wonderful, Maggie one of the admin staff donated her skill and time on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday 11th November - Remembrance Day

Memorial ServiceMemorial Service

Shoreham (Brighton City) Airport held a two minute silence at 1100hrs at the Memorial on the circle, south side of the main terminal building.

Multiple Sclerosis Sponsored Walk

"Yet another successful walk, although it was typical that it rained! We would like to thank everyone at Shoreham Airport for their hospitality. I hope we didn't leave too much mess, one or two of the walkers weren't good at wiping their feet when they came in! The tea and sandwiches were most welcome.

We had 58 walkers, so hopefully it will raise over £5000 for us.

Please thank everyone on our behalf.

Jane"

Friday 21st July
Sussex Ferrari - An Area Group of The Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain - Sunset Parade

The howl of a Ferrari hung over the warm still evening air and in the distance a red dot travelled at an unbelievable speed along what was the main runway of Shoreham Airport. What a great evening for Sussex Ferrari at Shoreham.

After the marshals and drivers briefings, 60 members enjoyed a buffet supper before taking 21 Ferraris airside and then as soon as permission was given by Air Traffic Control, onto the main runway where all models Ferrari including a F40, a 360 Stradale, five F430's plus a number of 355's, the latest Super America, some 308's and 328's were all lined up for a swift run down the main runway.

Apart from a brief halt in proceedings where we had to wait for a few minutes while the local Police helicopter landed at its base here, the whole evening ran like clockwork.

Thanks for everybody for taking part in the driving, for all friends who turned up to join in the fun but most of all to the superb team of marshals including Phil Stafford and his team from Rosneath Engineering who all made the evening happen. Everybody did a superb job very professionally indeed.

Sunday 2nd July
Jaguar Sunset Parade

Old and New

Leader Car Showing The Way

Some absolute beauties at the Jaguar Parade. As you can see 'old and new', some you could hardly hear, just a gentle purring up the runway, others a little more of the race circuit type. If you like cars, just feast your eyes on these images.

Friday 30th June
Corvettes - Car Parade

Corvette had a great line-up airside of the Main Terminal Building but started a little late. Their evening attracted 40 cars and 80 spectators. The Sunset Parades are becoming very popular at Shoreham Airport and spectators love them too.

It's not to be taken as an evening where drivers can go wild, it's got to be well organised and safety is of the utmost importance. There is an club organiser who gives a briefing to all the drivers and spectators with marshals in attendance. There is also a member of Shoreham Airport staff on hand.

Wednesday 28th June
Tony Gardiner's Beagle Artwork

Tony Gardiner started at Beagle in 1960 straight from art college and left in 1968.

The idea, initially, was to just frame Tony Gardiner's original piece of sixties artwork that seemed in danger of getting spoilt (being pinned to the wall). It then occured to a friend of mine, Alistair White, that while it was in our hands why not see if there was a possibility of taking off a few prints - we really wanted a copy for our walls! Then along came the prototype 206 which seemed to need oodles of money. So we decided to try and raise some by producing and selling loads of prints (and signed by the artist as well). I got in touch with Tony and he was all for it. The economics seemed reasonable for a run of 100 so we went ahead. It was a bit of a risk having such a limited appeal but it seems to have got off to a good start with one being sold virtually before the ink had dried from Tony's pen. Apparently there is also quite a bit more interest. We intended launching sales at the Redhill Airshow in August followed by the Shoreham Airshow but it looks as though I'll have to step up production a.s.a.p The artwork is a classic bit of the sixties and appeared on the cover of the 1963 B206 brochure, which I think was the first brochure for the larger and heavier 'Y' version.

Framed and signed prints are going for £29.95 and unframed, also signed, for £12.95. There could be some at the Shoreham Airport Visitors Centre by the end of July and people can contact me on, evenings only, 01983 756846.

Monday 26th June
Flight of Hope

Captain Simon Drakeley, a BMI pilot waded through the rain to fly 32 aircraft to raise money for CLIC Sargent. Take a look at their website www.flightofhope.co.uk. He was pleased with the outcome raising £12,000 but was extremely tired by the end of the day. Well done Simon, you achieved your aim.

The Ultratones

8.00pm - 11.30pm

As usual a fantastic turnout for The Ultratones, they never let the crowd down and everyone seems to dance all evening. It's obvious they enjoy what they do and want to have fun.

Monday 5th June
Sussex Air Ambulance Appeal

A presentation of a cheque for £50,000 to the Sussex Air Ambulance Appeal by the Freemasons was held at Shoreham Airport on the 5th June '06. It couldn't have gone to a more worthwhile cause.

Adur Arts Festival - Shoreham Airport Series

Tuesday 6th June
Miles High

Miles High had a fabulous evening playing 70's / 80's music and even got a standing ovation at the end of the evening. Well done and we hope you see you again soon.

Wednesday 7th June
Alyson Green

A fantastic night for Alyson Green in the Shoreham Airport Adur Festival series. The Fly-In Bar & Restaurant had a full house and by the looks of things Alyson and her Jazz Quartet were enjoying themselves.

Adur Festival

GLASTONWICK 2006

Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd April 2006
Fly - The London Airshow

On entering the show a stunning Javelin aircraft took pride of place and did look impressive. There was a 'runway' as the main path with exhibitors branching off it. As usual the "sim city'' was popular and many seminars took place.

Over the three days 10,272 people passed through the doors.

Shoreham Airport's stand consisted of the following:

  • Dennis Kenyon and his DVD showing on a 42" plasma screen and also the sale of his book
  • RAFA stand - information on the Shoreham RAFA Airshow
  • Shoreham Airport merchandise, which went very well
  • Complimentary sparkling wine from Ridgeview Vineyard in Ditchling
  • A 42" plasma screen constantly showing a flight simulator where you could fly anywhere in the world
  • Rowland Silcox, Shoreham Airshow artist, he had an excellent show and was thrilled
  • Geoff Sperling joined us from Skill Air, Northbrook - CoVE Manager www.skillair.com
  • Two girls from a London agency to distribute Shoreham Information packs

Overall this was a better show than in previous years.

Friday 28th April
Murder Most Fun

THE DEAD FUNNY COMPANY in association with the Fly-In Bar & Restaurant, Shoreham (Brighton City) Airport present a MURDER MYSTERY DINNER

"MURDER MOST FUN"

The Murder Mystery evening was a huge success in the Fly-In Bar & Restaurant. The restaurant was full to bursting and because of the turnout there will most probably be another Murder Mystery later in the year. Some people turned up in costume and they all took part in the evening. The Dead Funny Company enjoyed it as much as the diners. A comment overheard was 'what dood value for money'..........look forward to the next one!

Saturday 25th March
Aeromart

The biggest Aerojumble & Aviation collectors event.

The Aeromart opened for trade at 0800hrs on Saturday and 1000hrs for the public. All the usual stalls were there i.e. aviation art, books, medals, memorabilia, militaria and much, much more. A mini bus was available to transport people to and from the main terminal building for refreshments.
