Normandy Property Show - A Successful Invasion!

27th April 2008

A Successful Invasion!

Last Sunday, Shoreham had a real influx of Gallic visitors from across the Channel. As well as the French market in the town, Shoreham airport, decked out in jaunty French bunting, played host to the first exclusively Normandy Property Show.

Organisers Pippa Weitz, of property company PWT Normandy Life, and Judy Mansfield of First Rate FX, the currency specialists, pronounced themselves delighted with the first Normandy Property Show, designed to showcase the best of Normandy's numerous attractions. The event, held in Shoreham airport's art deco terminal, attracted 15 exhibitors and over 300 visitors came along on the day.

To the strains of accordion music, the visitors came from Sussex and Surrey, from Dorset and Hampshire... There was even a visitor all the way from Norfolk! Most of the visitors came along to look through details of the thousands of attractively-priced properties on offer, and took free advice from the stands on display.

The exhibitors ranged from estate agents to tax accountants; the Normandy Tourist Board gave away brochures of hotels and guesthouses, spoke of restaurants with mouth-watering menus, and described Norman attractions from William the Conqueror's castles in Caen and Falaise, the amazing Mont St Michel, and the impossibly beautiful Monet's gardens in Giverny.

The builders of the imaginative and futuristic 'EarthShip' eco-house - the only one of its kind in Europe (so far!) - were on hand to explain this superbly energy efficient concept to the interested audience.

The links between Sussex and Normandy were strongly in evidence in the form of Rob Silverstone, a Brighton-based author and chef who has worked in both Brighton and Rouen, Normandy, and has written 2 books about his exploits. On Sunday, he gave away one of his signature freshly-baked apricot scones with each book sold - and you can find the recipe for them in his book 'A Mule in Brighton'.

Chris and Micki Slade, directors of Worthing property company "A House in Normandy" said they had had a great day, with viewing appointments already in the diary!

The organisers also display the Anglo-Normandy links: Pippa lives and works in Hove, but has a holiday home in la Manche, Normandy, whilst Judy lives and works full-time in the beautiful Normandy countryside. These ladies, like all the Show exhibitors, can speak with the benefit of real experience of life and work across the channel, and which they eagerly shared with their appreciative visitors.

Life in Normandy, with its green rolling countryside, delicious creamy cheeses, world famous apple tarts, reasonably priced houses and gentle way of life, is only 50 minutes away, thanks to the frequent flights with our local Skysouth airline.

Further details of the show, including photographs, a link to box 424.com ex-pat radio's programme about the show, comments from exhibitors (see exhibitors' page), and a list of Grand Draw prize-winners, can be found on the Show's website at: www.normandypropertyshow.com

For interviews please call 01273 422 143 or 07880 501 116 or email info@normandypropertyshow.com. Photos available of Judy Mansfield and Philippa Weitz, and of Normandy properties.

Sponsored Charity Bike Ride

13th April 2008

Multiple Sclerosis Sussex Treatment Centre

On Sunday 13th April, 32 cyclists set out from Shoreham Airport to raise sponsorship for the Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centre in Southwick. Their route took them along the Downslink, the disused railway line which runs from Shoreham to Guildford, although these riders stopped at Two Mile Ash, a distance of over 18 miles. The most enthusiastic riders headed back by bike after a pleasant pub lunch at the Bax Castle, although most were happy to be driven back to their cars at the airport in the transport laid on by the Centre. It was a great day out, despite the odd downpour and puncture, and will raise over £3000 for the Centre.

About the BDFA

The Batten Disease Family Association (BDFA) was created in 1998 to support and help families, carers and professionals, who have contact with a child with Batten disease.

At present there is no cure for this group of genetic metabolic diseases, which causes a progressive deterioration of the brain and nervous system, leading to an early death. The association has been built up and is run mainly by volunteers of which most are individuals who have contact with or are parents of children with Batten Disease.

The group of diseases known as Batten disease or the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are progressive degenerative, genetic metabolic diseases that occur in children and adults. The condition is named after the British paediatrician who first described it in 1903. Batten disease is relatively rare occurring in about one in 30000 births. The illness leads to a progressive deterioration of the brain and nervous system.

Although our understanding of Batten disease is improving all the time, there is at present no cure or treatment that has any significant impact on the inexorable decline in bodily functions and inevitable early death.

As yet, no specific treatment is known that can halt or reverse the symptoms of Batten Disease/NCL. Meanwhile, scientists pursue medical research that will someday yield an effective treatment.

Through the work of several scientific teams, the search for the genetic cause of NCLs is gathering speed – the hope of the future lies in research.

As everyone knows, scientific research of any kind is driven by funding. Financial assistance for scientific investigations into the cause and future treatment of Batten Disease/NCL is always needed.

All Contributions very gratefully received!
The organiser for this charity evening is Jean Gilbert and she can be contacted on:
Tel: 07949 792498

Consultation on development proposals

1st February 2007

Erinaceous, the new owners of Shoreham Airport, are to host a public exhibition to display revised proposals for the refurbishment of the listed Terminal Building and associated development at Shoreham Airport. The exhibition will be held between 3pm and 8pm on the 1st February 2007 at Shoreham Airport, Premier House, Ground Floor Eastern Entrance, Cecil Pashley Way, Shoreham-by-Sea BN43 5FF.

Erinaceous put forward their initial development proposals at the Shoreham Airshow in September 2006 and the plans have subsequently been on display at the airport. As a result of the comments received and following ongoing discussions with Adur District Council, West Sussex County Council and other organisations such as the Civil Aviation Authority, revised proposals have been prepared. The proposals feature:

  • Restoration of the listed Terminal Building – the refurbished building will allow improved public access, providing terminal functions and a restaurant on the ground floor, with an aviation club and a function / conference suite above.
  • Aviation square – two new three storey mixed-use buildings flanking the terminal building to provide a focal point at the heart of the airport.
  • Flight centre - a new hangar and serviced office accommodation building.
  • Airside operations buildings - new fire station and air traffic control tower buildings.

The proposals will allow the airport to enhance the quality of passenger facilities alongside the continued use of the existing runway configuration. This will enable the airport to continue to operate as an improved General Aviation aerodrome.

Display boards will show the revised plans and representatives of Erinaceous and Shoreham Airport will be in attendance to answer queries.

There will not be a formal presentation, but it will be an opportunity for those living / working in the area or with an interest in the airport to discuss the proposals and to provide feedback. Members of the public are welcome to drop in anytime in the five hour period.

Feedback from the event will help in the preparation of a planning application for the proposals.

If you cannot attend on the 1st February, copies of the display boards will also be available to inspect at Adur District Council Offices from the 5th to the 9th of February, and will also be made available on this website from the 5th February 2007.
